CONWY CRICKET CLUB
NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2004
DINNER DANCE
This has now been arranged for Friday 2
nd April at the Deganwy Castle Hotel. Given the tragiccircumstances that caused it to be cancelled last November it is hoped that all members will support
this function.
PRE-SEASON INDOOR NETS
Net practice commences on Sunday 7
th March at Llandudno Junction Leisure Centre from 5.00pmuntil 7.00pm and goes on for the next five Sundays after that. Hope to see everyone there.
OUTDOOR NETS
These will commence on a Tuesday night as soon as the evenings are light enough. We have reached
agreement with Llanrwst Cricket Club to obtain the services of their professional who will come
along to these outdoor net evenings to offer us coaching. As the club will have to pay for him we may
have to make a small charge for these sessions, but this arrangement can only be to our benefit.
PRE-SEASON GROUND WORK
The square needs rolling, the clubhouse needs tidying, some equipment will need repairing. It is your
responsibility as a member to offer some of your time in this respect. Graham hopes to get the rolling
done mid-March so please bear this in mind.
The club has received a donation from Conwy Town Council towards the repainting of the exterior
woodwork of the clubhouse for which we are extremely grateful. We have to acknowledge their
generosity and make sure we get the job done. Volunteers and arrangements will be sorted once the
indoor net sessions get under way.
PRACTICE MATCH
As is usual we hope to arrange a practice match on the ground on the Saturday before the opening
league games. This year it will be Easter Saturday, April 10
th, so once indoor nets starts you will beasked if you will be available on that date.
LEAGUE MATCHES
The 2
nd XI starts on Saturday 17th April at home to Bala 2nds. The 1st XI starts on Saturday24th Aprilaway to Gwersyllt 2nds. We play the first round of the Welsh Cup away at Pwllheli on Sunday 9
thMay.
END OF SEASON TOUR
It is hoped we can have a sufficient number of players ( plus wives, partners, husbands etc ) available
for a tour to the Cotswolds immediately after the League season in mid-September. Plans and
costings for this will have to be made well in advance so please consider now whether you would wish
to go.
CHILD WELFARE
Paul Williams has kindly volunteered to be the club’s Child Welfare Officer ; a post that League
rules say all clubs MUST have. New regulations mandate that ALL members who play in the same
team as, or indeed have any connection at all, with under 18’s MUST fill in a ‘ Self Declaration
‘ form. Each of you will be given a form to complete which you will then return to Paul in a sealed
envelope. Paul will be the only club member to see these forms so they will be treated in extreme
confidence. Umpires, and coaches MUST complete a full Criminal Records Bureau form, again
in full confidence, to be seen only by Paul who will then forward the form to the ECB Child
Welfare Officer. Anyone who does not complete one of these forms will not be allowed to play for
the club. Any further details can be obtained from Paul when the forms are issued to you.
INSURANCE
A reminder that although the club has third-party insurance etc, the club’s policy DOES NOT cover
personal insurance for the players. E.g. Should you get injured and be unable to work you will not be
able to recoup any money from the club insurance. If you are liable to be financially troubled by such
an event you should consider taking out your own personal insurance cover.
Following on from this, remember that Steve Wypler offered to give members quotes for most types of
insurance, with a commission being paid to the club should a policy be taken out. Steve may also be
able to quote you for a personal insurance. Have a word with him.
MIDWEEK MATCHES
Please remember that there will be no senior Evening League team this season; the Colts team will
still play in the league so there will still be a requirement for some senior players to play in their team
and assist with the organisation/transport etc, so if anyone wishes to be involved please let Alan
Lavery know. Several midweek afternoon friendly fixtures have been arranged again this year for
which strong teams are required ; e.g. Over Peover ( home and away ), Liverpool ( home and away )
Rajput Warriors ( our Indian friends ). Please check the fixture list for the dates and let us try to put
out teams that will result in close games. The Conwy Celts ladies team will be playing in the Evening
League again this season, and are as ever looking for more ladies and girls to join them. Please let
Karen know of anyone who is, or may be, interested.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS
This year we would like to increase the social element of the club by arranging more functions but we
need the members to support them. The committee are open to ideas, e.g. Quiz nights, Horse Race
nights, Ten-pin bowling.
UMPIRES
As you know, this is a very important element of our Saturday league matches. As yet we are not sure
of the position with regard to the necessity or otherwise of providing an umpire, or the availability of
individuals if there is a need. Therefore, if any member is not selected on a particular day, or has an
injury which prevents them playing, it would be appreciated if the member would consider making
themselves available to umpire.
NEW COMMITTEE
As a reminder to those who were present at the AGM in November, and for the information of those
who were absent ( why weren’t you there ? ) the new committee is as follows :-

IN MEMORY OF MIKE STEEN
Mike was a respected and valued member of Conwy Cricket Club for many years, and most of you
will be aware that Barbara asked for donations in lieu of flowers. The many kind donations have
been shared between Conwy Cricket Club and Rhos Table Tennis Club, and one suggestion that the
committee are looking at is to install a large clock, dedicated to Mike, in the exterior roof of the
clubhouse to replace the original that was damaged by vandals. In addition, as a result of a discussion
with Mochdre Cricket Club where Mike was a member prior to joining Conwy, we will inaugurate a
trophy in Mike’s memory to be played for annually between the two clubs. Barbara has also offered to
provide a new club award for fielding to be awarded annually to one of our members in the same way
as other existing awards. Last but by no means least, it is Barbara’s wish that Mike’s ashes be scattered
over our playing square. This ceremony is planned for Easter Saturday prior to the club practice match;
we hope that you can attend this moving occasion. The committee members look forward to seeing you
all again this season ; let us enjoy our cricket and all that goes with it.
Best wishes to you all.
